(PRODUCT) RED + GIRL SKATEBOARDS

(Product) Red recently partnered up with Girl Skateboards to produce a deck to stop AIDS in Africa. Normally (RED) partners with huge global brands that can contribute massive revenue to their cause. This is one of hopefully many smaller companies getting involved with (RED). Check out the video featuring Girl art director/art dumper Andy Jenkins and Eric Koston, who needs no introduction. Don't forget about The Berrics getting the BGP's.

The Rolling Exhibition - Kevin Connolly

Kevin Connolly started a great photo project to document the expressions and reactions to his skating by them. The expressions capture such a range of emotions because Kevin was born without legs. Check out the Rolling Exhibition and a video short segment called "What Are You Looking At?" on People of the Web to learn more

Comet Skateboards and e2e Materials

Good for Ithaca! Comet Skateboards combined with e2e Materials to use petroleum-free biodegradable composites developed at Cornell University in their skateboard construction. The e2e laminates update the traditional 7-ply and glue with soy and hemp layers to produce a more environmentally friendly board.
Nice to see some innovative products coming from my alma mater and local skatepark.

Nike Zoom TRE ads

Check out the Nike SB ads for the Zoom Tre, shot by John Humphries. I love the fisheye combined with the pixelated ceilings. I'd like to see the set they shot against here. I appreciate that Nike takes a little different stance on the ads by creating sets and combining graphics and photo. Their P-Rod commercial is a great example of their work.

2ReVert

2ReVert takes old skateboards and recycles them into jewelry. Skateboards are made up of 7-layer maple plywood, with some plys being natural and others colored, which makes for some beautiful material to work with! Above are a few of the designs I liked - you can check out more here.

Habitat Metamorphosis Tote

I'm not a big fan of the man-tote, but the Metamorphosis Tote would be great for a girl or going to the beach. The simple pattern and bold color are trademark Habitat.

Chocolate Skateboards City Street Series

Chocolate consistently puts out great artwork series on their decks. They are always worthy of hanging on a wall, and sometimes I think that it would be better to hang than skate them. Check out their City Street series (left) and the Italo Modern series (right) from this season's decks.

Lakai Recycled Program: Kost-One and Coda

Brand spanking (almost) new: The Recycled Program from Lakai utilizes recycled waste material to conjour up custom, while mismatched, Kost One's. The Coda, with fewer upper panels, is also available for those with quieter taste.

Brian Gaberman

How many photographers can say they had a part in 411? And Chomp on This shouldn't really count as comparison. Brian Gaberman is now behind the lens and building a beautiful portfolio of skate photos that go far beyond simply documenting a trick. In a field recently dominated by high-production videos, it's nice to see a single instant framed, lit, captured and printed.
We're heading to the Bronx for Thanksgiving and are taking Thursday and Friday off - enjoy the holiday weekend! Tell your mama's what you're thankful for!

Drop Sneakers Not Bombs - Nike x Active Free Rod

The Nike x Active Free Rod is the Drop Sneakers Not Bombs version of the P-Rod and the Free. I love the feel of the Nike Free and anything that uses the Free midsole/outsole is good for me.
DSNB sneakers are available through Active only and proceeds benefit Invisible Children

Altamont Apparel

Altamont is the new apparel company started by Andrew Reynolds. They make some very nice stuff. Lady of the Night (left) and Invisible (right) are both from the 2007 hoods line. I like the washed-out qualities of all the clothing. Check them out.

The Megaramp

The Megaramp is no joke. It has its own official blog now. I recommend checking out the construction photos of The Staples Center. Try to pick out a person in the photos, that will show you how huge this thing really is.

Alien Workshop - Dylan Rieder Pro Model

I am a sucker for anything with a process overprint on it. There's something about cyan, magenta and black that go so well together. The new Dylan Rieder Pro Model by Alien Workshop fits my tastes pretty well.

éS - the scale

éS recently released the scale, the lightest technical skate shoe around. The technology for the shoe was developed by The STI Lab, the one and only R&D lab strictly for skate shoes. The STI site is worth checking out to learn how they are working to protect your feet while increasing skateability of the shoes. So expect to see the lightweight tech in the rest of the Sole Tech family of shoes in the future.

London 2012 Logo
The London Games organizing committee released the new London 2012 logo/brand to much awaited ... weeping and gnashing of teeth. An immediate source of great controversy, the logo/brand is drawing fire from almost everyone. Opponents started an online petition on Monday to revise the logo, which as of this afternoon was 48,000 signatures long.
Citing an inspiration from graffiti artists and youth culture, the bag-of-bones running Wolff Olins is probably about 20 years overdue. Looking at the 2012 logo, Mark Gonzales's iconic board for Vision, by Andy Takakjian, comes to mind. The catch is that Vision released the Gonz board 20 years ago.

Stoked Sessions Two - Zoo York x Giant x Stoked

Stoked Mentoring is a NYC/LA 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that I really believe in and actively promote among my friends and community. They use skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing as mentoring tools for at-risk youth here in nyc and in la. By combining a stellar mentoring program with a boardsport-based curriculum (for both mentor and mentee) to teach self-awareness and community building, Stoked is at the forefront of this non-conventional mentoring approach. I have been serving on their advisory board since last year and I am excited to see where we go this year.
On June 6th at Pink Elephant, Zoo York will hold a fundraiser and release a limited edition board and t-shirt designed by Mike Giant to benefit the Stoked Mentoring 2007 season. If you are in NYC, I urge you to contribute and help us expand our programs and outreach.
Tickets are $40/advance and $50/door. Purchase tickets for the fundraiser here.
If you are interested in volunteering or contributing in ANY way, whether you want to be a mentor, teach surfing or have other contacts that you think can help our organization, please contact info(at)stokedmentoring.org.

Morphology of Skate Tools

How many ways can you skin a cat? There are only three things you need to tighten/loosen on a skateboard: mounting bolts, axle nuts, and kingpin nuts. The tools above do those three things in wildly different fashion. Manufacturers from left to right: Destructo, Fix Stix, Almost, and Lucky. There are probably another 20 different tools by other companies, all different and all patented.

Emerica Ridgemont Redux - Glow In The Dark

The Emerica Ridgemont is a nice little slip-on that's been around for a few seasons. They usually do a few simple colorways and one or two freaky ones. I posted the FOS colorway before. These New Ridgemonts glow in the dark.

Modern Series by Tony Larson for Girl

One of the most iconic deck series of all time (for me at least), is the Modern Series by Tony Larson for Girl. Rick Howard's Eiffel Chair is my favorite, only because I dream of a house full of them in all sorts of colors. Someday perhaps. How you would ever find this complete set, I have no idea. But if I walked into someone's house and these were hanging on the wall, that person would be my hero.

Stuntwood - The Birth, Life and Death of a Skateboard

Fishegg Films recently released Stuntwood - The Birth, Life and Death of a Skateboard. If the trailer is any indication of the documentary, it looks like a great diversion from regular skate videos. It's always interesting to see the stories associated with skateboarding. I liked ON Video because they always had the side articles that explained the history of things like the Carlsbad High gap, etc.
Anyways, check out the trailer and learn something about skating and how that chunk of maple gets under your feet.

Habitat Skateboards - Bamboo Construction

I have been riding Habitat decks for a few years now. I like that they are an east coast company. And their graphics have always been very nice. They have recently taken more inspiration from actual images of flora and fauna as opposed to iconic representations of those flora and fauna. And the Danny Garcia shapes flip around really well for me.
They recently released a Bamboo Panorama Series which uses 15% bamboo (1-ply of 7) in addition to the traditional hardrock maple construction. Bamboo is a very sustainable resource because of its rapid growth cycle. They also offer a hemp-ply construction which uses a hemp fiber layer to reinforce the maple construction.

If you are interested in attending or purchasing art, please visit the Stoked Live Art Auction Website and register.
Stoked is a great and growing organization that I am always excited to volunteer for design projects. As we collaborate more, look for posts on the blog detailing the events and how you can contribute by becoming a mentor or simply by volunteering.
