File this under odd but awesome – if I ever had the need for a safe, I would totally get the limited edition Millionaire safe by Boca do Lobo for its mix of materials and the awesome exposed gears (which perhaps make it less secure as a safe?). Apparently modeled after a 19th century safe which was the victim of numerous bank robberies after the Gold Rush of 1849, the original safe was never cracked by the would-be robbers. The Millionaire safe displays the marks of the break-in attempts, remaining deformed forever.

I so need this CableStrip cord organizer by Rockpool Designs. I always have a mess of cables going here and there, and this would be the perfect, quiet solution to my issues…

Hudson/Nichols designed this beautiful packaging for the limited re-release of the iconic Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim Camera for Four Corner Store, a shop that specializes in toy cameras. 75 units were created for the limited edition.

Jessica and Jesse of Nervous System just released these new Generative Puzzles featuring one-of-a-kind complex puzzle shapes and artwork from contemporary digital artists (Jonathan McCabe seen here). My favorite part of the puzzle are the random recognizable puzzle pieces that they inserted into the designs.

A little more about the project:
Each generative puzzle is a one of a kind creation with unique art and pieces. Our goal was to marry the artistry of traditional, hand-crafted jigsaw puzzles with the possibilities of new technologies. Custom software simulates crystal growth to create an organic interlocking pattern. Our laser cutter translates this into a unique set of plywood pieces. We collaborated with contemporary digital artists who created engaging artwork for the puzzles.
To create the organic shape of the pieces, we designed a system based the simulation of dendritic solidification, a crystal growth process similar to the formation of snowflakes that occurs in supercooled solutions of certain metallic alloys. By varying the parameter space, it can produce a variety of cut styles. You can read about how our simulation works here.
The puzzles are made entirely in our studio in Somerville, MA. We print the artwork on archival paper and laser cut the puzzles from birch plywood. They come in two sizes, a round 7.5″ puzzle with 85 pieces and a rectangular 18×12″ puzzle with 410 pieces. Every puzzle is unique.

I’m not sure what it is about this headset that I like so much, but the Ag++ Type S mobile phone stereo headset is truly gorgeous! Now, if they would just add some colors to the collection, I would be set!
The features and functions of these high performance earbuds have been thoroughly researched and refined with an eye on the form and expression of this object that touches the human body daily. The minimalist yet dynamic design enhances the functions and technical features of these earbuds: the cord, the silicone pads, the aluminum casing, the audio driver and the other features are not simply spare parts to be assembled but acquire an aesthetic presence. With Ag++ Type S, an aluminum earbud set that includes a mic and an Apple compatible remote, controlling the volume and managing the sound tracks, recording your voice, and answering calls are all just a click away.

Eric Rea and Levi Price recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to launch their beautiful, minimalist iPad cases: Bowden and Sheffield.
These cases have been designed to fully protect your iPad during everyday use while not sacrificing the design and feel of the iPad itself. The idea was to build a case sturdy enough to take a beating, but sleek enough for any setting. Our focus was to create a simple, clean look, while using as many natural materials as possible. We wanted this product to be crafted of the finest materials right here in our home state because it just makes sense to build things close to home.

Sci-fi movies always live or die by the quality and believability of the production design to create the world of the story. Prometheus looks like the real deal.

Welcome to the future – Altaeros high altitude blimp/turbines that utilize the high speed winds of the upper atmosphere to generate electricity. Only one problem – helium is not a renewable resource.

I have been in love with the Alien/s mythology since I was a kid and saw Aliens for the first time. It seriously freaked me out and I thought that the little monsters were hiding behind the vents in the bathroom in my grandmother’s apartment. Now that I am older, I know that they obviously haven’t made it to Earth yet. And it definitely happens in the future, so I think I’m safe.
Ridley Scott released a pretty cool piece of marketing for the new prequel – Prometheus: a TED talk in the near future before Weyland creates synthetic humans and “the corporation” becomes the intergalactic profiteer of questionable ethics. He doesn’t explain much about what he’s up to other than creating pseudo-people, but linking the stories is cool enough for me. No mention of Hyperdine Systems in the Prometheus info, not sure why. Since the crazy android in Alien was a Hyperdine model, as was Bishop in Aliens. Maybe more info coming down the line.
