I love this print by Carolin Löbbert – Dame der Großstadt. It’s been a gray few days in New York City, but temperatures are warming, and spring feels like it is just around the corner. Dame der Großstadt resonates with this feeling of the beginning of spring after a long winter – little hopeful bits of color beginning to emerge. Dame der Großstadt roughly translates to “Women of the City”, and was inspired by data on climate change Carolin compiled while in university.

Because Sean and I had our baby last week, we are slowing down the print releases over at The Working Proof for the next month, releasing a print every two weeks. Our regular weekly release schedule will resume on March 15th.
We’re pleased to launch Partition Refinement, by Maxwell Holyoke-Hirsch, an artist and illustrator living and working in New York City. The piece was originally painted in gouache on canvas. 15% of the sale of this print goes to Puppies Behind Bars.

Orange, by Matthew Green, is a fun screenprint featuring an illustration of an orange with some lovely legs (her legs are nicer than mine, I’m not going to lie!). A simple, humorous print with a lot of awesome detail.

Trevor Burks created a series of illustrations called Skateboarding Mythologies that revolve around skating in small towns and the suburbs. I definitely remember days like these.

Tasha Kusama’s The Night Travelers print is about stages of being – journeying through the unknown, relaxing, meditating, reviewing, collecting – cycling through life and the decisions that bring us from one state and place to the next. I love how she represents the journey – it is rich, complicated, colorful, confusing…
15% of the sale of this print goes to The Pablove Foundation. Tasha has a personal connection to Pablo, the boy who is the reason behind the foundation. Tasha’s niece was in Pablo’s pre-school class when he was diagnosed with cancer, and she saw the valiant struggle that he and his family experienced, and the love that took them through it. She is honored to give to a cause with so much heart (as are we!).

This is our second edition with Frances Pelzman Liscio – Yellow Roses/Milkweed, a print that incorporates a distinctly Victorian sensibility of delicacy, of heartfelt love, of sincerity and of warmth.
The yellow roses both reveal their magic and conceal it at the same time. The small ‘heart’ in the middle is actually created from the two sections of a milkweed pod. The curved piece of broadleaf plantain seed stalk reminds me of the woven hair wands that Victorians would make in mourning from the hair of a departed loved one, while the fresh sweetness of the African violets is optimistic and bright. This image also incorporates the green textured ‘seedballs’ of the Pond cypress that grows at the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in Upper Montclair, NJ. They resemble little golf balls. They fit together like a brilliant puzzle, until they ripen and then the entire seed ball comes apart when you touch it. There are also brown dried seed clusters from the wild onions that grow unchecked in the creek bed at the iris garden, and I know they are weeds – they are just magnificent when they are four feet tall and top heavy with bulbils. I pulled those little yellow and red “cushions” off of some cactii – they are prickly but the colors are so delicious that I used them throughout the composition.
Perfect for Valentine’s Day, right? 15% of the sale of this print goes to Puppies Behind Bars. Read our latest interview with Frances here, and buy the print here.

A nice print (above) from a very cool installation titled “Alejandro and The Idea Machine” (below) by Souther Salazar. Unfortunately, the installation closed in December of last year and can’t be seen anymore.

I have been a huge fan of APAK’s work for the longest time, so I am super excited to launch Grow Your Imagination, a beautiful print about how dreams are like a garden that must be patiently nurtured from young seeds to a full, vibrant, blossoming garden. Grow Your Imagination embodies everything that I love about their work – whimsy, fantastical worlds, gorgeous color, and unexpected details.
15% of the sale of this print goes to 826 National because Aaron and Ayumi love that 826 empowers kids to make their dreams real through writing – helping to grow imaginations! Buy the print here, and read our interview with APAK here.
