A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain.

Tatiana Arocha

My friend Alice sent me this link ages ago. Tatiana Arocha is a versatile artist with work ranging from print, motion graphics to illustration. My favorites are her illustrative work. I love the textured, Japanese-inspired graphics. You can find Tatiana in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where she is involved in the arts community, Servicio Ejecutivo.

The Megaramp

The Megaramp is no joke. It has its own official blog now. I recommend checking out the construction photos of The Staples Center. Try to pick out a person in the photos, that will show you how huge this thing really is.

Remake

Very cool recycled products from Etsy seller Remake. The envelopes above are made from security envelopes turned inside out, and the notebooks from recycled folders, alphabetic dividers and various types of recycled paper.

Naked by Alberto Colzani

The Naked by Alberto Colzani is a spindly little chair with a lot of character. The thin supports converge to form a chair of peculiar scale. And I love the playful detail of the hand slot. The finish can be either funky or sophisticated, depending on the fabric and metal finishes. Overall a very fun little chair.

Heinrich Fiedeler

Love the Drop fixture by Heinrich Fiedeler for Anta which looks like a glass-encased light bulb. Elegant and simple!

Peter Callesen

My mom reminded me of the work of Peter Callesen, a Danish artist who works primarily with paper, creating amazing paperscapes by contrasting negative and positive space and 2-D and 3-D, all within a sheet of A4 paper. It was really hard to choose my favorites because they are all so great! Thanks, Mom!

Apollon Rings by Lucie

Anna and I recently purchased our wedding bands from Niwaka, and we're so excited to have them soon. While we were at the offices, they told us that their new 5th ave store will also carry rings by Lucie, their sister brand. I love the simple statement of all their rings. Each one is clean and elegant, not like the gaudy American and European jewelers. The Apollon rings reinterpret the circular profile by introducing the pointed corners to give the ring a stronger presence. And I love the addition of the inset blue diamond on the side surface of the ring.

Guillaume Delvigne

The Lampe (72dpi, 144dpi, 300dpi) by Guillaume Delvigne for Industreal is a study in pixelation. The lamp comes in three versions, ranging from "high resolution" to "low resolution".

Beautiful/Decay Artist Series Apparel Line

Sasha from Beautiful/Decay emailed us about their artist series apparel line, where they collaborate with established and emerging artists to create t-shirts. A few of the shirts I liked (left to right): "Girls Girls Girls" by Milano Chow (not actually from this line of shirts, but I liked it and there aren't any girls' tees in the artist series, yet), "Heavy Drummer" by Saiman Chow, and Jan Kallwejt's "Lung Music".

Jorine Oosterhoff

The "Tea Time" collection is a very playful set of tableware from Jorine Oosterhoff. I love the smooth lines and the irregular shapes. Inspired in part by Alice in Wonderland and other fantastical characters, "Tea Time" would be a fun addition to your tableware collection. Available at Rose and Radish.

Grace & Go

Bold and gorgeous graphics from London-based Grace & Go. I love the animal print towels (they have some great baby onesies with a similar graphic).

Alien Workshop - Dylan Rieder Pro Model

I am a sucker for anything with a process overprint on it. There's something about cyan, magenta and black that go so well together. The new Dylan Rieder Pro Model by Alien Workshop fits my tastes pretty well.

Notcot.com

Sean and I are super excited to announce that we are going to be blogging over at Notcot.com (in addition to the Sub-Studio Design Blog, of course!). I am a huge Notcot fan, and love Jean's design taste, so to be working with her is such an honor! You can see our first post (about the Sasa Saddle Pail, above) here.

Melissa Moss

Melissa Moss sent us a link to her illustrative work a while back. Her work is very imaginative - I love the creepy trees silhouettes and all the little creatures.

AvroKO - Social House

AvroKO recently completed the Social House, a maximalist restaurant among the new restaurant/lounges on the Las Vegas Strip. I think the cabinet of curiosities/apothecary wall that surrounds the stairwell is incredible. Each drawer is individually lit and the entire wall is operable, allowing the restaurant to create a constantly changing surface texture. While the restaurant draws on a number of one-liner decor choices, I can't argue with the fact that it looks amazing.

Andrew Grima - Royal Jeweller

The 'Gondola' (left) and 'Cerini' (right) watches, designed by Andrew Grima, are each 30+ years old. In spite of their age, they are years ahead of today, and will continue to be so. Be sure to check out some of the other watches featured in the Ideas column on the right and the archive.

The Simpsons go to Paris

Found over at Notcot.com...This is hilarious! In honor of the soon to be released Simpsons movie, Harper's Bazaar has a fashion spread titled "The Simpsons go to Paris with Linda Evangelista" in the August 2007 issue. The illustrations feature the Simpsons dressed in haute couture or as the various designers themselves.

Itoya Pointkeeper Mechanical Pencil

The Pointkeeper Mechanical Pencil by Itoya is a curious little item. The mechanical pencil is housed in a real-wood casing, just like an old-fashioned No.2 pencil. And by clicking the eraser, you advance the lead. Weird.

Gorgeous glass jewelry from Niina Mahlberg. Each intricate piece is handmade in her Helsinki, Finland studio. I want one of those rings.

Das Design

The Nightstand and Bed from Daniel Schultz, designer and craftsman of Das Design in SF are both incredibly beautiful. I really like how the subtle curves and corner details make the pieces become more alive when viewed obliquely.

Joanna Mendicino emailed us about some very sweet new work. I like that the images are made through a void rather than through a relief.

Robert Stadler

I know I posted about Robert Stadler's +336+ SMS mirror a few days back, but browsing through his website reveals such a great body of work, so I want to post a few more items...

The Pentaphone is a lovely change from the standard telephone booth. It is gorgeous to look at, and besides that, it is adjustable to your height.

Foreveryoung would be a nice replacement for my 5 lb weights. These dumb-bells are made from Carrara marble and are available in 3 and 5 kgs.

Serge Atallah - Spaghetti Dozer

Normann Copenhagen recently released Serge Atallah's Spaghetti Dozer. The tool features three different sizes for different portions of pasta, a la The Three Little Bears. I have always sized my pasta portions from the old standby - the 35mm film canister.

Frerk Muller

We recently sold some prints to Shelf, a lovely shop in London. When checking out their store, I came across Frerk Muller, a Berlin artist. I love, LOVE his raven prints. The crude shape and simplicity of each bird is so appealing, giving each raven a distinct character. The prints cost £70 framed and £30 unframed. As soon as the dollar gains some strength, I'm buying one!

Kho Liang Ie Collection - Royal Mosa

Kho Liang Ie was one of The Netherlands most significant and influential interior and industrial designers and Royal Mosa has revived some of his simple and basic white relief tiles. They bring a quiet ripple to the typically taut appearance of a white tile wall.

Robert Stadler +336+ SMS Mirror

Mirror, mirror on the wall...Danielle over at Style Files posted about the +336+ SMS Mirror by Robert Stadler, a mirror that can receive text messages, and I couldn't resist posting about it here. As one gets closer to the mirror, luminous text appears. If you are like me, you can forget about buying one - only twenty have been made and they cost $10,000 each! If not, you can purchase one here.

Yoyo Floor Lamp

The yoyo was one of my favorite toys as a child. I spent hours trying to make my yoyo do tricks. The Yoyo Floor Lamp does the greatest trick of all by solving all of your hard-to-light issues. It comes with a long, 16m cable, so you can light an area that is far away from an outlet. The Yoyo Floor Lamp was designed by Catarina von Martèrn and Lisa Landström and manufactured by Elmar Flötotto.

Seen over at Aquire.

Ting Vintage Belt Floor Mat

Found this interesting floor mat over at Branch. Designed by London-based Ting, the mat is made up of a bunch of vintage leather belts that are mounted on a backing of reconstituted leather. The worn leather (and the color variance) is really beautiful. Each mat is made to order. They aren't cheap at $648, but they are pretty!

Malin Lundmark

Here is a way for you to personalize your furniture. You can decorate your pendant lamp with your favorite necklace, or you can hang your necklace on a shelf that reinterprets "intarsia", an Italian building tradition where a decorative pattern is inlaid into a surface. Malin Lundmark's website doesn't seem to be working, so I unfortunately can't find much information on her. I'd love to know more about Malin's work, so if anyone has any leads, let me know!

Incase iPhone Protective Cover

iPhone Protective Cover by Incase is a slick little sleeve with a great topo-inspired texture on the back. If I had an iPhone, I would definitely have to get one of these to protect that little thing.

Nike Back to School Package

I usually leave the shoes to sean, but I came across these on Core77 and thought were interesting. These are from Nike's limited edition Back to School package. The shoes are all modeled after classic school items, such as the Mead composition notebook, Elmer's Glue and Crayola crayons. The shoes haven't yet been released, but the rumor mill anticipates an August release date.

Stef Kardos - Ratatouille

We went to see Ratatouille over the weekend and thought it was great. The posters above were for the European release. Stephane Kardos created the two on the left, taking a cue from the art deco aesthetic of the 1950's (see A.M. Cassandre's poster on the right).

Happy 4th of July and be sure to take in some fireworks wherever you are. We will be taking the day and night off, so see you Thursday!

Greetje van Helmond

Greetje van Helmond is a student at the Royal College of Art, where, for the RCA summer show, she exhibited a line of jewelry called Unsustainable. The pieces in Unsustainable are made from sugar crystals that are "grown" in a solution right onto the cord.

Greetje's interest is in taking banal, everyday products and turning them into beautiful, seemingly valuable objects.

From the artist:
In present day life we can say that we consume a lot. Durable materials are often used for the production of goods that are typically replaced or thrown away quickly. Contrary to this I use everyday, basic materials to create products that appear valuable and sustainable. Because of the materials I use, the products won’t last long, but long enough to stay "new".
