Ryan Church – John Carter

I just read A Princess of Mars, the Burroughs book that Disney adapted into John Carter. Though critics have semi-panned the movie, I think I would like to check it out. The book has semi-detailed descriptions of multiple cultures and their respective architecture/technologies/aesthetics like the Heliumite ship and tower below.

It’s always interesting to see how artists interpret literary worlds. The conceptual design for the environments and vehicles was done by Ryan Church and it is a little ornate, but I do like it. It is crazy to think that Burroughs conceived of the things that he did back in 1917. A lot of it is far more interesting than the “world of tomorrow” type of futurism.

  1. Ryan church subbed for one of my classes in college and did a 1-hour demo. It was amazing what the man can do in such a short amount of time.
