A hilarious set of illustrations by Christoph Niemann at the NYT – Unpopular Science – explaining science through examples from Christoph’s everyday life with a family in NYC.

I love this print called Autumn Poppy by Natalie Tweedie, perhaps better known as Nebo Peklo. I love the simplicity of the linework, the fall colors…While her work is perfect for the medium, this is the first letterpress print that Natalie has ever produced of one of her line drawings. The letterpress adds a great textural quality to the artwork.

Back in July, I posted about the NIF. It got the Big Picture Treatment last week.

This time you can see the change in scale – 1st one of the laser bays where electricity is converted to photons. 2nd the target chamber, where 192 lasers all focus their beams. 3rd – inside the target chamber. 4th – the target hohlraum, which itself holds a miniscule 2mm diameter capsule where the focused laser energy can recreate conditions of the sun to start a small fusion event.

It’s pretty incredible that all that equipment to nuke something the size of a mustard seed. Makes you appreciate how much energy the sun actually generates: The NIF generates about 1,000,000 joules. In one second, the sun generates 380,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules.

The NYTimes has an interesting photo feature of the last 100 years of the subway system. It shows an era that I am glad I missed – the sketchiness of the subway back in the late 70′s to 80′s. But the 40′s to 50′s would have been cool to see.

I like this Aakkoset alphabet shelf by Kayiwa for a kid’s room. It can also be used as a room divider and comes in a bunch of different colors – black, blue, green, orange, red, violet, white and yellow.

I love these new wallpaper designs by Samantha Hahn – so colorful and pretty!

Now that Anna’s pregnant, she’s on the DL for our soccer team. But I am still playing and always on the lookout for shoes. And I came across these insanely bright Nike5 Elastico Finale’s. All I can say is you better have a lot of flare in your play to warrant a pair of shoes like this.

Philips makes this thing called LivingColors LED Lamp. A swipe of the colorwheel remote sets the dimming and changes the LEDs to 16 million different colors. It’s a cool way to change the atmosphere in your room to something new. I think the mini version might go well in a kid’s room.

I spotted Alexa Meade’s artwork on Cup of Jo, and was totally amazed – Alexa paints ON people, to create living, breathing 3-D paintings. I love how you can look at her work from all different angles, and it still looks like a painting. So dynamic!
